Simbad is a scientific and educational Java programming language simulator. The software has a real support for artificial intelligence used in service robots. It could be used on Mac OS X , Windows XP and some Linux distributions.

MRDS and BLENDER are two of the most advanced 3D simulation tools with support for environmental parameters

Webots is 3D simulation platform developed by Cyberbotics and used in service and industrial simulations. The tool offer support for Windows, Linux and Apple platforms, and is one of the most used simulation software in education or research purposes. Any robot can be modeled, programmed and simulated in C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab, or URBI. The software is compatible with external libraries like OpenCV.

And still capture, which is a strong point of the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+, isn't that practical either. With the Phantom you can start and stop video via a smartphone app, and take stills while in the air. The GoPro has to be set to record before takeoff, and records until you turn it off. The Tarot gimbal that 3D Robotics sells for the Iris+ does a good job of steadying video, although I did notice a few jitters when reviewing footage captured with a GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition . I set the camera to record 2.7k resolution footage at a 24fps, and it's a definite step up from the 1080p footage captured by the Phantom's integrated camera. The extra resolution makes it crisper, and while it shows compression artifacts, especially when adjusting the tilt of the gimbal, it does a better job keeping footage crisp when flying over bare branches.

The Iris+ is a bit awkward to carry—certainly more so than the DJI Phantom series, which is smaller in comparison (its wingspan is 13.8 inches). 3D Robotics provided a hard carrying case for review. It's huge (24.5 by 19.5 by 12 inches) and heavy (19.75 pounds), but it's extremely well-padded, with precut foam inserts for the drone and accessories. It has wheels and a handle, and I'd have no concerns checking it as luggage on a flight given the protection it provides. The case isn't inexpensive, however—it sells for $280.

"The magic of computers is they solve that mechanical complexity and transfer it to the software," Munoz says. The reason drones began taking off in the post-smartphone world was not just that costs were coming down, Munoz adds, but also that what we know as drones today were suddenly "very robust, very easy to repair and easier to fly."

"It weighs as much as it looks," he says with a laugh. For most people, something that size looks like it may weigh hundreds of pounds. For Munoz, who understands just how light drones have become in the last 10 years, the drone weighs an appropriate 45 pounds, or more than 10 times the amount of his company's standard vehicles.

Munoz, who thinks he was around the seventh person to register on the site, used it to show off his prototype projects and share code with fellow enthusiasts, including his groundbreaking autopilot system created from the innards of a Nintendo Wii remote. It became clear to Anderson in 2009, when he wanted to begin selling more DIY kits over the Internet, that he could turn to Munoz to get it done more efficiently. That partnership led to 3DR's incorporation in 2009.

"The smartphone was a product that was intended for a consumer market, and now it went all the way to industrial applications and even the medical industry," Munoz says. "The same is happening with drones."

In the search for Anais Nin, one of the first few links shows a picture of a man. Why? Since Nin is a woman, I canít figure out why. Can you show some reason for this? Who is he? If you click on the picture a group of pictures of Nin and no mention of that man. Is it an error?

I like it . It is very good.

I want to simulate an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) and its sensors in an industrial (or non industrial) terrain, which software is the best to use, so that the simulation results (position, sensors etc) can be used back as a feedback to the main controller (in MATLAB)?

RobotSim is a virtual development tool designed by Cogmation Robotics able to run on Microsoft Windows XP. This is a 3D program with support for a suite of software developed by the same company. The RobotSim is a powerful tool to design and build service robots.

How We Test Drones

As mentioned earlier, I'm not a fan of flying by sight. There was one scary moment when I lost track of the Iris+ as it flew over some trees. I could hear it clearly, but I just didn't know where it had gone. The Return-to-Launch function came in handy here. With a flick of that switch, the Iris+ came straight back toward its takeoff point. My only complaint is that it flew there backwards, rather than turning around; I think the video would have looked a bit better if it was flying forward. But that's a minor complaint when compared with the prospect of losing track of an expensive drone, never to see it again. The Iris+ returns to launch automatically in the event that its battery is running low; it's only good for about 16 to 22 minutes of flight time per charge.

Bottom Line: The 3D Robotics Iris+ may have some appeal for tinkerers and hobbyists, but most users will be happier with a drone that offers more features out of the box.
